The predecessor of the Fujian Provincial Library was a library established in 1906 of the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In February 1911, the library moved to the former site of the Yue Mountain Academy and was named the Fujian Library. In 1913, it was renamed the Fujian Public First Library. It was renamed the Fujian Provincial Library in 1952.
By the end of 2022, the library's Hudong Road building covered an area of 41,100 square meters, with the Zhengyi Academy building covering 400 square meters. The library has 18 institutional departments. Its collection includes 4.12 million volumes (items) of physical literature, 43,000 types of Chinese and foreign electronic books, journals, and newspapers, and 85 digital resource databases.
